DIY Ingredients for Hair Growth

Pinterest is chock-full of DIY hair remedies using only ingredients you can find in your fridge or pantry. From raw eggs and coconut oil to even soaking your strands in beer—on purpose—do these magic home remedies really work? We’ve done the research, so you can avoid the sticky (and occasionally smelly) situations.

Coconut Oil

This tried-and-true ingredient has had beauty pros buzzing for years thanks to its moisturizing abilities, but hair experts are on board, too. “The vitamins and fatty acids in coconut oil help nourish your scalp and penetrate the cuticle of the hair,” celeb stylist and beauty expert Cynthia Alvarez tells MarieClaire.com.

Pro Tip: Apply this DIY coconut oil overnight sleeping mask (1) from root to ends and comb through generously. Let the hydrating nutrients work their magic while you sleep and wash it out in the a.m. for the softer, stronger hair of your dreams.

Onions

Besides being an M.V.P in the kitchen, onions have proven themselves beneficial for hair growth and restoration. According to a small study published from the Journal of Dermatology (2) participants who suffered from alopecia areata, a non-scarring, patchy form of hair loss, saw positive results from onion juice after two weeks. The liquid was applied to the scalp twice daily.

Now, the burning question: Why onions? These hardworking vegetables contain a crazy amount of nutrients and antioxidants, like the sulfur found in keratin, which is an integral component of human hair. Give onion juice a try, but warn your friends and family first. You may be crying tears of joy at the results.

Apple Cider Vinegar

The cosmetic benefits of this all-natural ingredient date all the way back to the Romans (e.g. shine and dandruff prevention). However, there’s little scientific research to prove that ACV rinses actually prevent or treat hair loss.

We’ll still be keeping a bottle in our beauty cabinet. After all, those Romans had a knack for doing things right.

I apologise, but, in my opinion, you are not right. I am assured. Let’s discuss it. Write to me in PM, we will communicate.
